Mumbai: BMC to Install 417 Lift Pumps at 386 Flood-Prone Spots Ahead of Monsoon

Mumbai, 12th May 2025: With 386 waterlogging-prone spots identified across the city, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has planned to install 417 lift pumps this year to combat monsoon flooding. This move is part of the civic body’s intensified pre-monsoon preparedness after facing criticism over waterlogging and drain cleaning in previous years.
Last year, BMC had arranged 482 lift pumps for similar sites. Although fewer pumps are being deployed this year, officials say the focus is on improved efficiency and system strengthening. Additional Municipal Commissioner Abhijit Bangar recently inspected the drain cleaning work in the western suburbs, including areas around Vakola River, SNDT Nallah, Oshiwara River, Piramal Nala, and Ramchandra Nala.
Bangar has instructed engineers to remain vigilant and ensure that desilting and drain-cleaning processes are carried out without malpractice. He also warned of strict action, including holding contractors and officials accountable in case of lapses. The civic body has been asked to keep alternative arrangements like rotating pumps and vehicle-based diesel generator sets ready to ensure uninterrupted drainage operations.
A box drain is also being constructed in the low-lying Vakola River area to enhance water flow. To curb drain choking, iron mesh has been installed in the SNDT drain zone, reportedly reducing household waste inflow by 90%. Agencies have been directed to promptly remove solid waste and debris from densely populated areas.
Unseasonal rains earlier this year had already caused waterlogging, raising public concern about the city’s preparedness. However, BMC claims that 13 of last year’s 24 flood-prone spots in specific areas have been eliminated due to the expansion of the rainwater drainage network.
As the monsoon nears, the civic body aims to streamline operations to ensure Mumbai stays afloat during the rains.
