Mumbai Braces for Rising Temperatures: IMD Predicts 38°C by Weekend

Mumbai, 4th March 2025: Mumbai is set to experience a maximum temperature of around 35°C and a minimum of 19°C today, with clear skies, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). After a period of extreme heat and a heatwave alert, the city witnessed a slight dip in temperatures over the weekend.
On Monday, the Santacruz observatory recorded 35.3°C, while the Colaba coastal station reported 31.8°C on Sunday. However, this temporary relief is expected to be short-lived as the IMD has predicted another temperature surge, with highs potentially reaching 37-38°C by the upcoming weekend.
Last week, Mumbai endured unusually high temperatures, peaking at 38.7°C on February 26—the highest recorded in February in the past eight years. For three consecutive days, maximum temperatures remained above 38°C, prompting the IMD to issue a heatwave alert for coastal areas. Experts have attributed this unusual heat to the absence of winter rainfall.
The IMD has issued a yellow alert for hot and humid conditions in the neighboring districts of Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg. In Mumbai, maximum temperatures are expected to hover around 34-35°C until Friday before witnessing a sharp rise.
The IMD’s seven-day forecast suggests that daytime temperatures could exceed 38°C by March 9. Historically, Mumbai’s highest recorded temperature for March was 41.7°C in 1956, while the lowest was 12.7°C in 2012.
IMD Mumbai scientist Sushma Nair has attributed the anticipated temperature increase to an anticyclone system, which is bringing in easterly winds.
