Mumbai: Central Railway Installs First Upgraded Technology CCTV Camera At Byculla Railway Station; Expects Increased Safety For Passengers

Byculla, 13th October 2023: Taking note of increasing incidences of women’s harassment and public safety at local stations, the Mumbai section of the Central Railway decided to install state-of-the-art CCTV cameras equipped with Face Recognition Systems (FRS) in railway station premises. The first of these CCTV cameras was recently installed at the Byculla railway station through the Camera Nirbhaya Fund.

According to the information provided by the Central Railway, six stations, namely CSMT, Dadar, Kurla, Thane, LTT, and Kalyan, are equipped with integrated security systems. These stations are equipped with high-tech CCTV cameras with facial recognition capabilities. Hence, in its latest series of technology upgrades, the central railway has decided to update the technology of CCTV cameras installed in other stations.

It has been learned that a total of 2,509 CCTV cameras will be installed in 76 stations in the Mumbai division in a phased manner. Out of these, 297 cameras will be equipped with face recognition systems.

In the first phase, the work at Masjid, Byculla, Chinchpokli, and Curry Road stations is expected to be completed in the upcoming two weeks. 10 FRS cameras will be installed at Byculla and Mulund stations. Further, four to ten CCTV cameras will be installed in each station. The installation of cameras has been undertaken in Central Railway station categories A1, A, B, C, D, and E. Out of these, the CCTV cameras with FRS will be installed in A1, A, B, and C category railway stations.

The work of installing CCTV on the entire Central Railway will be completed in the next one to one and a half years, and it is expected to cost around Rs 82 crore. CCTV cameras will be installed at platforms, ticket reservation centres, parking areas, the main entrance, and the pedestrian bridge. Furthermore, a senior official of the Central Railway informed that the system has the capacity to safely store 30 days of information.
