Mumbai: City Witnesses Decrease In Dengue, Leptospirosis, And Gastrointestinal Diseases, But Malaria Cases On The Rise

Mumbai, 23rd August 2023: Mumbaikars can finally breathe a sigh of relief as health officials report a noticeable decline in the cases of dengue, gastrointestinal diseases, and leptospirosis during the month of August. While this marks a positive turn in the city’s battle against these health concerns, a lingering cause for concern remains, with malaria cases continuing to surge.
The latest findings from the state’s medical department reveal a concerning uptick in malaria cases across the city. In July, Mumbai recorded 721 cases of malaria, and the situation hasn’t shown signs of improvement in August either. Disturbingly, the first three weeks of the month alone have seen 704 malaria cases, adding more than 225 new cases per week.
Similarly, though the overall number of dengue patients remains higher in August compared to the preceding three weeks, there has been a recent downturn in the disease’s incidence. The statistics reflect a fluctuating trend: 157 dengue cases in the first week of August, followed by 240 cases in the second week, and a decline to 98 cases in the third week. In July, the city reported a total of 685 dengue cases.
The reports further highlight a substantial reduction in cases of leptospirosis, gastrointestinal diseases, hepatitis, chikungunya, and H1N1 in August compared to the previous month of July. This positive shift in disease prevalence underscores the effectiveness of various preventive measures and healthcare interventions.
