Mumbai: Coldplay Concert Ticket Sales Cause BookMyShow Crash Amid Massive Demand

Mumbai, 23rd September 2024: Just moments before the highly anticipated Coldplay concert tickets were set to go on sale, the website of entertainment and ticketing platform BookMyShow crashed. The concert, scheduled to take place in Mumbai next year, generated overwhelming demand, leading to the platform’s temporary failure.
BookMyShow attributed the crash to a massive spike in traffic, noting that efforts were made to give all fans a fair opportunity to purchase tickets.
“A historic day for live entertainment in India, we witnessed incredible excitement for Coldplay’s Music Of The Spheres World Tour 2025. With 13 million (1.3 crore) fans attempting to buy tickets at once, emotions were high—some fans secured tickets, while others faced disappointment,” said a spokesperson for BookMyShow. The platform stressed its commitment to ensuring equal chances for all.
To handle the surge, BookMyShow implemented a queue system to manage demand. Issues caused by suspicious or malicious traffic were resolved swiftly, causing only a brief delay and ensuring minimal disruption for genuine fans. Due to the unprecedented demand, a third concert date was added in Mumbai, which also garnered significant interest.
The British band, returning to India after nine years, will perform at Mumbai’s DY Patil Stadium on January 18 and 19. Following the massive response, Coldplay will now also perform on January 21, 2025, as part of their Music Of The Spheres World Tour.
Following the platform crash, many disappointed fans took to social media platform X to voice their frustrations. One user commented, “Missing out on Coldplay tickets was understandable, but not being able to log in was frustrating.” Another added, “BookMyShow didn’t even prepare the servers. Why host the ticket sale if the system can’t handle the traffic?”
Though BookMyShow soon resumed ticket sales, long online queues frustrated users, with many sharing screenshots showing messages like “six lakh people ahead of you” while trying to purchase tickets.
Before their Mumbai concerts, Coldplay is set to release their new album, Moon Music, on October 4, 2024. The album will focus on sustainability, with LPs made from recycled plastic bottles—each record using nine bottles.
Since its debut in March 2022, the Music of the Spheres World Tour has sold over 10 million tickets, making it the highest-attended tour by a band in history. The tour spans Europe, North America, Latin America, Asia, Australia, and New Zealand, with additional performances in cities like Abu Dhabi, Seoul, and Hong Kong scheduled from January to April 2025.
