Mumbai Comedian Seeks Online Support After Ex-Landlord Withholds Deposit; Mumbai Police Intervenes

Mumbai, 5th February 2024: Kashyap Swaroop, a Mumbai-based comedian, recently gained attention on social media, particularly on X (formerly Twitter), after resorting to the internet seeking assistance in retrieving his security deposit wrongfully withheld by his ex-landlord. Swaroop shared screenshots of his communication with the landlord, shedding light on the situation.

In a detailed post, Swaroop outlined, “My landlord instructed me to vacate my residence before the termination of the lock-in period. Despite leaving the house in excellent condition, he has yet to refund 60% of my security deposit. Are there any lawyers who can help recover the remainder? He is avoiding my calls and messages.”

The shared WhatsApp conversation depicted Swaroop reminding the landlord about the pending refund and issuing a legal warning if necessary. The landlord’s response, “Pls do what you have to do. Thanks,” added a layer of indifference to the situation.

The post quickly garnered widespread attention, accumulating over 7 lakh views and attracting various comments offering advice. Swaroop subsequently sought assistance from the Mumbai Police. Following police intervention, the landlord complied with the refund, marking a resolution to the dispute.

In a good update, Swaroop expressed appreciation, stating, “Thanks to everyone who helped, shared their experiences, and gave me some solace here.” He elaborated on the multifaceted backstory involving issues such as the lack of awareness around electric vehicles, unethical CCTV monitoring, and intimidation. Swaroop disclosed that he approached the police, who facilitated communication with the landlord and requested him to explain his side at the police station. Although the landlord initially claimed to have transferred the deposit, Swaroop’s bank statement contradicted this assertion. Within an hour, the comedian successfully retrieved the withheld deposit, showcasing the effectiveness of the legal recourse.
