Mumbai, 14th September 2023: The customs department arrested two people from Mumbai International Airport in connection with the smuggling of gold worth Rs 1.25 crore. The incident came to light on September 12. Notably, one woman is also apprehended in this case.

The arrested accused are identified as Y. Jalaluddin and Sanjita Begum, and both are residents of Chennai. On September 12, packets containing gold powder hidden in the wax were thrown into the domestic airport area from the international airport by an accomplice of the accused.

When this duo tried to pick up those packets, a vigilant team of Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel apprehended them. The duo was planning to take that gold from Mumbai Airport to Tamil Nadu, evading the customs department’s attention.

Upon further investigation by the investigating agencies, the accused were confronted with the fact that they got a call from an unknown number regarding the arrival of the gold packets. The caller also assured them of the lump sum amount for this smuggling. But before they could wrap things up, they were successfully nabbed by the investigating agencies.

The officer informed that a case has been registered against both the accused under the Customs Act and they have been arrested. It is suspected that there is an involvement of any big gang behind this or similar operations in the country, and accordingly, police are investigating the matter.

Last week, the customs department arrested three people, including two Sri Lankan nationals, in connection with gold smuggling. The accused were smuggling gold using the same procedure.
