Mumbai: Extension of Harbor Line to Borivali; Malad Station To Be Upgraded As Well

Mumbai, 17th September 2022: The harbor up to Goregaon will be extended till Borivali. Malad station on the harbor will be elevated in the expansion project. Therefore, Sandhurst Road, Dockyard Road, Cotton Green stations on the Harbor route, and Malad station on Western Railway will also be upgraded in the future.

Local runs between CSMT – Panvel, CSMT – Andheri, and Goregaon on the Harbour route. Earlier, instead of Goregaon, the harbor service was running between CSMT – Andheri. Many passengers were traveling from CSMT to Andheri and then onward by Western Railway. Considering the demand from the local passengers, it was decided to extend the harbor service till Goregaon. It took December 2017 to start this work.

But due to technical reasons, local trains actually started running till Goregaon in March 2019. After receiving the response, it was decided to extend the harbor service up from Goregaon to Borivali. This project is being implemented under MUTP-3A.

Western Railway is working on the alignment plan for this route. Considering the space available for Goregaon to Borivali Harbor route, it will be elevated in some sections. Sumit Thakur, Chief Public Relations Officer of Western Railway said that “Malad and Kandivali are two stations between this harbor route and Malad station will be upgraded.”

A ticket window and other facilities will also be provided while upgrading the station. Geotech, as well as a drone survey of this route, has been completed. Thakur further informed that “the land acquisition plan and tree felling proposal has been submitted to the state authorities. Once the work is approved and funds are received from the state government, tenders will be floated for the works of this route. After that, it will take approximately three to five years to complete the work of this route.”

With the expansion of the harbor to Goregaon, the number of passengers will increase by two lakhs by 2031. So, the total number of passengers on this harbor route will reach up to 10 lakhs. Central Railway has a space problem to bring the fifth-sixth route from Kurla to CSMT. Therefore, an elevated track is being constructed between Chunabhatti – Tilak Nagar stations and the Kurla station on the harbor line coming between these stations will also be elevated. Kurla station has two additional lanes though they are required for freight traffic. Therefore, there are plans to upgrade the Kurla station on the harbor to provide more space.
