Mumbai: Fire Breaks Out in Santacruz West Residential Building, No Injuries Reported

Mumbai, 5th March 2025: A fire broke out on the third floor of a four-story residential building in Khira Nagar, Santacruz West, on Monday morning.
The blaze erupted around 10:40 am at the Kumkum Building on SV Road. The Mumbai Fire Brigade categorized it as a Level-1 fire, the least severe on its classification scale. Firefighters swiftly responded, working to contain the flames and prevent them from spreading. Authorities confirmed that no injuries had been reported, while the exact cause of the fire remains under investigation.
In a separate incident, another fire broke out at Salsette Building No. 27, near New Grade Insta Mill on B.A. Road in Byculla East on February 28. The Mumbai Fire Brigade classified it as a Level-1 fire. Officials stated that the fire was confined within the building, with further details awaited. Emergency response teams, including the fire brigade, police, BEST, BMC ward staff, and 108 ambulance services, were promptly deployed.
Last month, a fire also erupted on the terrace of Fairmont Hotel near Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport’s Terminal 2 in Vile Parle (East). Despite the hotel’s proximity to the airport’s main runway, flight operations remained unaffected. Thick black smoke was visible from the air traffic control tower, raising immediate concerns. Firefighters evacuated 70-80 people from various floors before successfully extinguishing the fire by 6:50 pm. No injuries were reported.
According to the fire brigade, the blaze was limited to the air conditioning unit and exhaust ducting, impacting an area of approximately 1,000-1,500 square feet on the terrace of the 10-story building with a three-level basement. Preliminary investigations suggest that the fire originated from electrical cables within the fresh air intake and exhaust units, with a malfunctioning fan suspected as the cause.
