Mumbai Grapples With Looming Water Shortage Amid Decreasing Lake Reserves

Heavy Rains Bring Relief To Water-Scarce Navi Mumbai, Morbe Dam Too Receives Good Rainfall

Mumbai, 3rd September 2023: Mumbai is currently facing a looming water shortage due to reduced inflow of rains in the lake area that supplies water to the city. Although the existing water reserves are sufficient to last for approximately one and a half months, the municipal administration is closely monitoring the situation.

If there is no substantial rainfall in the coming weeks, the municipal administration plans to review the water situation after September 15. This review may result in the imposition of additional water restrictions, exacerbating the water shortage in Mumbai.

Purushottam Malvade, Chief Engineer of the Water Department, clarified that if the existing water reserves continue to decline, a proposal to reduce water supply by 10 to 20 percent will be submitted to the commissioner.

All seven lake areas that supply water to Mumbai received substantial rainfall in July, which significantly increased the water levels in the lakes. As a result, the water cut that was announced on July 1 was lifted on August 1. However, the city has experienced a dearth of rain throughout the entire month of August, leading to concerns about the water supply.

Currently, the lakes have only one and a half months’ worth of water reserves to meet the city’s needs for the year. The situation has raised concerns among residents, particularly as expected rains have failed to materialize. If the lake water continues to recede, Mumbai may face a more severe water shortage in the near future.
