Mumbai Hotels Set to Ensure Safe Celebrations with Alcohol Consumption Guidelines

Mumbai, 28th December 2024: With the Maharashtra government permitting all-night New Year celebrations, Mumbai hotel owners are taking proactive measures to ensure a safe experience for revellers and prevent any alcohol-related incidents.

The Hotel and Restaurant Association of Western India (HRAWI) has introduced a policy to issue advisories to guests who consume alcohol excessively. This initiative aims to minimize the risk of accidents or inappropriate behaviour linked to alcohol consumption, according to Pradeep Shetty, HRAWI’s secretary.

Several large events are scheduled at hotels across Mumbai on December 31, as the government has authorized establishments to stay open until 5 AM on New Year’s Day.

Hotel owners have been instructed to ensure intoxicated guests are safely transported home. This includes arranging designated drivers for those with personal cars and organizing rides through services like Ola or Uber for those without vehicles.

In response to concerns over drink-driving incidents, including the May 19 Pune Porsche case that led to the deaths of two motorcyclists, the association has adopted stricter measures. Bartenders and staff have undergone special training to ensure the safety of both guests and the community during the festivities. Additionally, all guests, particularly young partygoers, must present valid ID to verify their legal drinking age.

Kamlesh Barot, former HRAWI president, emphasized the association’s commitment to not only monitoring alcohol consumption but also promoting responsible drinking. Hotels are displaying posters with anti-drunk driving messages, including the slogan “Don’t Drink and Drive,” to raise awareness.
