Mumbai: In Rescue Operations, Mumbai Police Frees Eight Child Labourers From Bag Factories; Two Arrested

Mumbai, 30th August 2023: The Mumbai Police rescued eight child labourers after a raid on a bag-making factory situated in Nagpada. This operation comes on the heels of a similar rescue mission that earlier saw the liberation of 13 children from a bag factory located in the Darukhana area of Mazgaon.

The decisive action was carried out by Mumbai Police in two factories situated within the Madanpura area of Nagpada. Two suspects were promptly apprehended in connection with the case: Hasmatullah Abdul Majid Mansuri (20) and Abdul Rehman Shaikh (25), the factory manager. These individuals were taken into custody on charges related to child labour and violations of the Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act.

The rescued children, who were found sewing bags, were believed to have endured this oppressive labour for a considerable span of time. The rescue operation was successfully executed through the collaborative efforts of law enforcement personnel and a local social organization. The children, some of whom were reportedly subjected to work shifts spanning 10 to 12 hours, have now been liberated from these deplorable conditions.

Prior to this operation, a related incident had unfolded in the Mazgaon area, where 13 children hailing from Bihar were freed from a bag factory. Shockingly, among the rescued children was a seven-year-old boy. The factory owner, identified as Ghaus Mohammad Faraz Mehboob Ansari (26), was then arrested for his alleged role in subjecting these innocent children to harsh and exploitative treatment. The rescued children have been sent to a juvenile correctional facility, and authorities are now working to establish contact with their families.
