Mumbai Marathon: Shock and Grief as Two Lives Lost, Dozens Hospitalized in Health Crisis

Mumbai, 22nd January 2024: In the Mumbai Marathon two participants lost their lives, and 22 others required hospitalization due to various health issues. The deceased were identified as 74-year-old Rajendra Bora from Goregaon and 40-year-old Suvradeep Banerjee from Kolkata, each succumbing to different medical emergencies during the race.

Rajendra Bora, participating in the senior citizen category, suffered a cardiac arrest and was pronounced dead upon arrival at Bombay Hospital. Meanwhile, Suvradeep Banerjee, a full marathoner, collapsed near Haji Ali junction, sustaining injuries to his forehead and knee. Despite efforts, he was declared dead at BYL Nair Hospital.

The health bulletin released by the organizers revealed that a total of 1,820 runners sought medical assistance during the marathon. The most common issues reported were muscle cramps, sprains, exhaustion, and dehydration. Among them, 22 runners required hospitalization for more severe conditions.

Dr Vijay D’silva, medical director of Tata Mumbai Marathon and Procam International, provided insights into the medical cases. He noted that 19 of the hospitalized runners had been discharged, highlighting the range of issues faced by participants, including chest pain, loss of consciousness, knee injuries, leg cramps, dislocated shoulder, shivering, hypothermia, brown eye, hand injury, foot blisters, calf muscle injury, dehydration, giddiness, and severe cramps.

The medical response involved treatment at various hospitals, with one runner treated at Bhabha Hospital, 14 at Bombay Hospital, one at TNMC & Nair Charitable Hospital, four at Jaslok Hospital & Research Centre, and two at Lilavati Hospital & Research Centre.
