Mumbai Metro Gains Popularity Amid Heavy Rains, Attracts Record 2.14 Lakh Passengers

Mumbai, 21st July 2023: The ongoing heavy rainfall in Mumbai has severely impacted railway services, causing major disruptions for local commuters. However, amidst the railway chaos, passengers on the Western Railway found solace in the Metro services.

Many commuters opted for the ‘Dahisar – Andheri West Metro 2A’ and ‘Dahisar – Gundvali Metro 7’ routes to navigate between Dahisar – Andheri West and Dahisar – Gundvali, Andheri East. On Wednesday, an astounding number of 2,14,070 passengers traveled via these two Metro routes.

The first phase of the ‘Metro 2A’ and ‘Metro 7’ lines commenced operations in April 2022, while the second phase was launched on January 19, 2023. During the initial phase, an average of 30,500 passengers utilized these routes daily. However, with the expansion of services in the second phase, both routes reached full capacity, leading to a steady increase in the number of passengers each day. The Greater Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMMOCL) reported that in the last week of June, the daily passenger count surpassed two lakh. On June 27, a total of 2,03,581 Mumbaikars traveled via these two routes.

Now, following the crossing of the two-lakh passenger mark, the number of passengers has surged to 2,14,000 within just a few days. Heavy rainfall in Mumbai over the past three to four days has caused disruptions in railway services due to waterlogging on tracks and other issues. During this time, many commuters opted for the Metro, as its services remained smooth and uninterrupted even during heavy rains. Consequently, a record 2,14,070 passengers traveled on the ‘Metro 2A’ and ‘Metro 7’ routes on Wednesday, making it the highest number of daily passengers recorded so far, according to MMMOCL officials.
