Mumbai Police to Deploy Interceptor Vehicles to Curb Speeding on Coastal Road

Mumbai, 8th February 2025: To address the issue of overspeeding on the southbound stretch of Mumbai’s Coastal Road, spanning from Marine Drive to Worli, the Mumbai Police will soon introduce two interceptor vehicles. Additionally, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) plans to install CCTV cameras with speed-tracking capabilities along the corridor.

Currently, the entire 10-km stretch is operational, and residents have raised concerns about luxury cars speeding at night, contributing to noise pollution. The designated speed limit on the Coastal Road is 60 kmph.

“The existing BMC CCTV cameras lack speed-monitoring features. As a result, the RTO has directed us to deploy interceptor vehicles on the Coastal Road. Initially, two units will be stationed starting next week. Simultaneously, BMC will install advanced cameras equipped with Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology,” said Anil Kumbhare, Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic), on Friday.

The initiative follows multiple complaints from residents of Breach Candy and Worli about noise pollution caused by high-speed vehicles at night. Concerned about the disturbance, resident Viren Shah wrote to the Mumbai Police and the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) on Friday, urging immediate action.

Sharing a video on social media platform X, the Breach Candy Residents’ Forum (BCRF) stated, “Every Sunday, supercars speed along the Coastal Road, generating excessive noise and disrupting residents’ peace. Despite several complaints, no action has been taken so far.”
