Mumbai Police’s 1930 Cyber Helpline Saves Businessman from Rs 35 Lakh Scam

Mumbai, 19th April 2024: The Mumbai Police’s 1930 cyber helpline has successfully prevented a scam targeting a South Mumbai businessman, saving him Rs 35 lakh. A gang posing as courier companies deceived the businessman by luring him into fraudulent transactions. DCP Datta Nalawade has advised the public to be cautious and avoid transferring money to unknown parties.

On April 13, the accused impersonated a police officer and a tax officer, leading the complainant to fear legal repercussions and transfer ₹35.12 lakh. The complainant immediately realized the scam and contacted the cyber helpline at 1930 to report the fraud.

The West Region Cyber Police took swift action, launching an investigation and coordinating with the nodal officer of the involved bank. Their efforts successfully froze the entire defrauded amount, preventing any loss to the complainant.

The scam involved a caller pretending to be a police officer and income tax officer, alleging that the complainant had received a parcel from the Federal Courier containing illegal items and transactions. To avoid legal action, the caller demanded the complainant transfer Rs 35.12 lakh, which the complainant did out of fear. However, thanks to the quick response from the cyber helpline and police, the businessman did not lose the funds.
