Mumbai: Pratap Sarnaik Proposes Ropeways, Pod Taxis, and Water Taxis to Tackle Metro Region Commuter Demand

Mumbai, 30th January 2025: Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik has instructed relevant agencies to explore additional modes of transportation, such as ropeways, pod taxis, and water taxis, to address the growing commuter demand in the metro region. Pod taxis, which are point-to-point services on specific routes, were highlighted as a potential solution.

Sarnaik also directed the MMRDA to conduct a feasibility study for establishing underground parking at strategic locations to mitigate the city’s severe parking issues. These topics were discussed in a high-level meeting led by Sarnaik, with officials from the Urban Development Department, Maharashtra Maritime Board, Transport Commissioner’s office, and the state transport corporation in attendance.

The meeting focused on incorporating alternative transport systems to reduce congestion and enhance last-mile connectivity. Sarnaik stressed the importance of introducing ropeways as a separate transport service and recommended creating a new mechanism for their implementation. “Currently, ropeway projects fall under PWD. The department should create new regulations to streamline the process,” he stated.
