Mumbai: President Droupadi Murmu to Inaugurate India’s First CAR T-Cell Therapy at IIT Bombay

Mumbai, 4th April 2024: President Droupadi Murmu is poised to inaugurate a groundbreaking advancement in cancer treatment at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay, Powai campus on April 4. The debut of India’s pioneering CAR T-Cell therapy for advanced blood cancer marks a significant milestone in healthcare accessibility. Unlike conventional treatments, this innovative therapy, spearheaded by Dr Gaurav Narula and Dr Rahul Purwar, offers a personalized approach tailored to individual patients.

CAR T-cell therapy stands out as a beacon of hope for many Indian patients, as it promises extended cancer remission without the necessity of a bone marrow transplant. This patient-specific treatment, which involves modifying the patient’s immune cells to target and destroy cancer cells, represents a paradigm shift in cancer care.

Importantly, the initiative also addresses the financial barrier to accessing cutting-edge treatments. By offering this therapy at a fraction of the cost compared to the US, with a price tag of ₹40 lakh, it opens doors for many who would otherwise find such treatment financially prohibitive.

President Droupadi Murmu’s presence at the inauguration underscores the significance of this achievement in advancing healthcare in India. With this groundbreaking therapy, the nation takes a significant stride towards providing affordable and effective treatments for advanced blood cancer, setting a precedent for accessible healthcare innovations.
