Mumbai, 24th May 2025: The Ministry of Railways has approved the construction of two new chord lines in the Mumbai suburban region, connecting Panvel–Somtane and Panvel–Chikhli. The 7.54 km project has been sanctioned at a cost of Rs 444.64 crore and will be executed by Central Railway.
Panvel, a key terminal on the Harbour Line, serves as a major junction linking routes to Diva, Roha, JNPT, and Karjat. The current operational setup lacks grade-separated crossings, often resulting in delays due to engine reversals.
To resolve these bottlenecks, the sanctioned project includes:
A chord line on the JNPT–Karjat corridor via the Diva–Panvel line flyover.
A second chord line between Kalddunrigaon cabin and Somtane station.
The proposed links are designed to improve operational efficiency, increase line capacity, and facilitate uninterrupted movement of both passenger and freight trains in the region.
