Mumbai Records Heavy Rainfall, IMD Extends Orange Alert for Konkan Region

Mumbai, 15th July 2024: Mumbai experienced significant rainfall over the past 24 hours, according to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) Disaster Management Department. From 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM on July 15, Mumbai recorded a total of 18.63 mm of rainfall, with the eastern suburbs receiving 165.53 mm and the western suburbs 148.34 mm, as reported by BMC’s Disaster Management Department.

The heavy rainfall coincided with high tides, the first occurring at 4:43 AM on July 15, reaching 4.32 meters, followed by a second at 5:09 AM, reaching 4.50 meters.

Initially issuing a yellow alert, later upgraded to orange for Monday morning, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has extended the orange alert for July 16 in Mumbai, Palghar, Thane, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg in the Konkan region.

On Monday, Santacruz received 48 mm of rainfall, while Colaba recorded 21.2 mm from 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM. The highest rainfall was in Ratnagiri at 90.8 mm, with Thane TBIA recording the lowest at 10.6 mm.

Despite the heavy rains, Mumbai reported no major incidents such as fallen trees or branches across the city, eastern or western suburbs.

Looking ahead, IMD has issued an orange alert for Tuesday for Palghar, Thane, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg in the Konkan region, as well as Pune, Kolhapur, and Satara. Raigad district has been placed under a red alert with expectations of extremely heavy rainfall in isolated areas.
