Mumbai: Retired Police Commissioner Duped In Cyber Fraud Case; Complaint Registered At Oshiwara Police Station

Oshiwara, 25th October 2023: Former Assistant Commissioner of Police Gyandev Wankhede has filed a complaint with the Oshiwara Police, alleging cyber fraud. The Oshiwara police have initiated legal proceedings under the Information Technology Prevention Act in response to this incident.

According to sources, Gyandev Wankhede fell victim to a fraudulent scheme, losing Rs 30,000 in a scam related to purportedly purchasing affordable dry fruits. Notably, Gyandev Wankhede is the father of Indian Revenue Service officer Sameer Wankhede.

The ordeal began when Wankhede came across an advertisement on Facebook promoting dry fruits, presented as “Mangal Dry Fruit,” from the APMC Market in Navi Mumbai. The advertisement also featured a contact number belonging to an individual named Ajit Bora.

Upon contacting this number last Sunday, the seller assured Wankhede of an affordable dry fruit purchase. In compliance with the agreement, Wankhede forwarded a list of desired dry fruits, including almonds, cashews, figs, and walnuts, valued at two thousand rupees. The payment was made via an e-wallet transfer.

Later that Sunday evening, Wankhede received a call from a different phone number, notifying him that his dry fruit package was ready. However, the caller claimed that the transaction had been blocked due to Goods and Services Tax (GST) obligations. Suspicious of his words, Wankhede cancels the transaction and seeks a refund for the dry fruits.

In response, the caller informed him that there was a technical issue with the bank account and proposed sending one rupee as a test. The perpetrator sent a code, and when Wankhede used it for transactions, he received a message confirming that several unauthorised transactions had been conducted from his account.

Upon realising that he had fallen victim to a scam, Wankhede promptly reported the incident to the Oshiwara police. As a result, the police initiated legal proceedings under the Information Technology Prevention Act and have commenced an investigation into the matter.
