Mumbai: Unity Infra Projects Limited Faces CBI Probe Over Alleged Rs 3,847 Crore Loan Scandal

Mumbai, 19th September 2023: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has registered a case of fraud and cheating against Unity Infra Projects Limited and its directors for allegedly defaulting on loans of around Rs 3,847 crore to the State Bank of India (SBI) and 15 other banks.

On August 17, SBI registered a written complaint with CBI in this case. According to the First Information Report (FIR), the CBI has registered a case against Unity Infra Projects Limited, its Chairperson and Managing Director Kishore Awarsekar, Vice Chairperson Abhijit Awarsekar, Executive Director Ashish Awarsekar, and Director Pushpa Awarsekar.

Surprisingly, this infrastructure project company had constructed the Matoshree bungalow of the Thackeray family at Kalanagar, the Dadar TT flyover, and the subway at CSMT. Additionally, the construction of the state ministry building, which was damaged a few days ago by fire, was also renovated by the same company.

SBI, in its formal complaint to the CBI, alleged that the accused company, with the help of unknown public servants and unknown persons, formed a criminal conspiracy and defrauded the State Bank of India and other groups of banks to the exaggerated sum of Rs. 3847 crore. The company had taken loans from SBI and other banks through various facilities. However, banks lost all these amounts, i.e., Rs 3,847 crore, as the company went bankrupt.

After that, in a forensic audit conducted by the banks in this matter, it was revealed that fraudulent transactions were made and wrong information was given by this company at the time of taking loans. Also, the audit revealed that the amount was diverted to other accounts. Accordingly, Deputy General Manager Rajni Thakur, on behalf of ‘SBI’, filed a complaint with ‘CBI’. After preliminary investigation of this complaint, the CBI registered a case under the conspiracy, cheating, and prevention of corruption act on Thursday against the company and its directors.
