Mumbai: Wadala Police Apprehend Chain-Snatching Gang From Chembur

Chembur, 5th October 2023: Wadala Railway Police successfully apprehended eight people from a notorious gang who snatched the gold chains of the passengers, taking advantage of the crowd at railway trains. The police took all the accused into custody and have seized a large number of illicit goods and some money from them.

According to the police, all the people apprehended in this case originally hail from West Bengal and are currently operating from various parts of Mumbai city. For the past few months, the railway administration has received many complaints regarding increasing instances of chain-snatching in railway compartments as well as at the railway station premises. One such incident happened two months ago, in which the gold chain of a passenger was snatched by thieves at Kurla Railway Station, injuring the victim.

After checking the CCTV footage from the station premises, police saw seven to eight people surrounding the passenger, snatching the gold chain from his neck. Accordingly, police formed a dedicated unit to look into the matter.

Two days ago, the police received a tip-off that some of the accused from this gang were outside the Tilaknagar railway station. Acting swiftly on it, the Wadala Railway Police laid a trap and incarcerated the four accused. The accused have been identified as Safiq Gayan (37), Ajijul Laksar (35), Alamgir Hussain (47), and Abu Tadafdar (37).

During the subsequent interrogation, the accused further provided the names of other accomplices. Accordingly, the police arrested four people, namely Jahangir Maula (37), Ashish Pradhan (38), Manrul Sheikh (25), and Javed Akhtar (25). The police put all the accused behind bars and are investigating other activities of this gang.
