Mumbai: Wall Collapse In Govandi Burial Ground Spurs Demand For Urgent Repairs From Citizens

Govandi, 22nd July 2023: In a recent incident at the Govandi Rafinagar Burial Ground, a wall collapsed during heavy rains. Fortunately, the burial ground had been closed for use, preventing any casualties. However, concerns are growing as other walls in the vicinity are showing signs of cracking, posing potential risks to nearby houses and residents.

The Govandi Rafinagar Burial Ground had been catering to the burial needs of a significant number of Muslim brothers, with an estimated eight to nine lakh individuals from the Shivajinagar and Deonar areas utilising the facility. However, due to the delayed decomposition of bodies, the burial ground was shut down several months ago by the East Division of the Municipality. Also, the soil here has been sent to municipal and private laboratories for testing.

Meanwhile, the city has been receiving heavy rains for the past few days. As a result, the wall of the burial ground collapsed here on Friday. With the condition of the burial ground deteriorating and the walls becoming increasingly unstable, the safety of neighbouring houses has also been compromised.

Fortunately, no casualties were reported, as traffic was limited due to the ongoing rain on this road. However, the incident has sparked a growing demand from residents and community members for immediate repairs to the Govandi Rafinagar Burial Ground.
