Mumbai Witnesses Increased Water Storage in Dams Amidst Anticipated Water Shortage

Mumbai, 1st July 2023: Mumbai and its neighbouring areas have experienced a continuous downpour of rain, resulting in a significant rise in water levels in the dams that supply water to the region. The recent rainfall has brought some relief to the people, as the water storage in these reservoirs has increased compared to last year.

Despite the favourable weather conditions over the past 3–4 days, last week the Mumbai Municipal Corporation made the decision to impose a 10 percent water cut. The decision is being implemented from today. This step has been taken as a precautionary measure to anticipate potential water scarcity during the months of July and August if the impact of El Nino materialises.

The water storage in the dams had reached a concerning low of 6 percent before the current spell of rain, but with the recent downpour, it has rebounded to a more promising level of 10.88 percent as of Friday. This increase in water storage is a relief for the authorities responsible for managing Mumbai’s water supply, and it brings respite to concerns about a potential water crisis.

The seven dams that play a vital role in supplying water to Mumbai—Udhrva Vaitrana, Modak Sagar, Tansa, Madhya Vaitrana, Bhatsa, Vihar, and Tulsi—have witnessed a rise in their water levels due to the consistent rainfall. Together, these dams have a combined water storage capacity of 1,57,412 million litres. Comparatively, the current water storage capacity in these reservoirs exceeds that of the previous year.
