Mumbai: Worli Underground Metro Floods Days After Inauguration, Services Hit

Mumbai, 27th May 2025: Just days after its grand inauguration, the newly opened Worli underground metro station on Mumbai’s Aqua Line 3 was left waterlogged and partially non-operational on Monday morning following the city’s first spell of heavy rain.
The torrential downpour, marking an early onset of the monsoon, caused significant water accumulation at the station, leading to the suspension of metro services between Acharya Atre Chowk and Worli. Commuters were caught off guard as the flooding disrupted morning travel and raised serious concerns about infrastructure resilience.
Officials from the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) attributed the incident to the collapse of a reinforced cement concrete (RCC) water-retaining wall at an under-construction entry/exit point along Dr. Annie Besant Road. Emergency teams were deployed to manage the situation and restore services.
“The breach occurred at an incomplete access point, which allowed rainwater to enter the station premises,” MMRC said in a statement. “Temporary measures are being taken, and a permanent fix will follow after an internal review.”
The flooding has sparked public criticism and renewed questions about construction quality and preparedness as Mumbai enters its monsoon season—known for intense and frequent rainfall.
Commuters and civic activists are now urging MMRC to conduct immediate safety audits across all operational and under-construction metro stations.
Restoration work is currently underway, with MMRC yet to announce a timeline for full service resumption.
