Mumbaikars Set to Experience Another Sea Walkway as Construction Along Princess Street to Bandra-Worli Sea Bridge Progress

Mumbai, 17th June 2023: Mumbaikars will get a new 7.5 km-long sea walkway, with the sea walkway taking shape from Princess Street to Bandra-Worli Sea Bridge. According to the information, this footpath will be longer in length than the footpath at Marine Drive. Also, as a protective measure, a sea wall will be constructed along this footpath to protect it against tidal waves.

The construction of the Sea Coast Road from Princes Street to the southern end of the Bandra-Worli Sea Bridge is in full swing. A marine walkway will be built parallel to the coastal road, and this walkway will be 7.5 kilometres long and 20 metres wide. This footpath will have a succession of stone seating, similar to Marine Drive. The construction of this wall started in January 2020, and now 84 percent of the work has been completed.

For the construction of the sea wall along the marine walkway, Armour Rock, a natural stone from the mine at Ulwe near Navi Mumbai, has been used. The weight of one stone is between one to three tonnes, and these stones have the ability to withstand high-speed waves. “These stones have been used in place of the cement concrete tetrapod at Marine Drive, as tetrapods do not support marine life. Conversely, these armour rocks are natural, and hence they are believed to be safe for corals as well as other marine life,” said Vijay Zhore, engineer of the Coastal Road.

This sea wall has been built high considering the high tides coming to the sea. Similarly, the height of the seaway adjacent to it has also been increased. Therefore, care has been taken to ensure that the waves do not come on the road during the monsoon season. Arrangements have been made to ensure that even if the water from the waves comes to the road, it will be carried away through rainwater channels.

It will be a wide road with a 20-metre-wide seawalk and a 17-metre-wide passing lane, then a 10-metre-wide median and a 17-metre-wide incoming lane.
