Mumbai’s Eid-e-Milad Celebrations Rescheduled to September 18 to Harmonize Festivities
Mumbai, 14th September 2024: The Maharashtra government announced on Friday that the Eid-e-Milad holiday in Mumbai will be moved from September 16 to September 18. This change comes as the local Muslim community has chosen to hold their Eid processions on September 18, avoiding overlap with Anant Chaturdashi, the final day of the Ganesh festival on September 17.
According to the release, local officials in other districts are also authorized to adjust the Eid holiday dates based on their specific conditions. Maharashtra Congress leader Naseem Khan had previously requested Chief Minister Eknath Shinde to shift the holiday to September 18 to accommodate the festival schedule.
Khan noted in his letter that the community’s decision to hold processions on September 18 will allow both Eid-e-Milad and Anant Chaturdashi to be celebrated fully.
This marks the second consecutive year that the Muslim community has agreed to reschedule their festivities to promote communal harmony. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 1) Pankaj Dahane praised the community’s willingness to adjust their celebrations, highlighting the spirit of unity and coexistence.
The Eid-e-Milad procession in Navi Mumbai typically begins in Turbhe, passing through Vashi and Koparkhairane before ending at Ghansoli Dargah. Eid-e-Milad, which celebrates the birth of Prophet Muhammad, is observed on September 16, contingent on the lunar calendar, with global Muslim communities partaking in processions.
