Mumbai’s: First Patient Of Zika Virus Found In Mumbai’s Chembur Area

Chembur, 24th August 2023: In Mumbai’s Chembur area, a 79-year-old man was found with symptoms of the Zika virus. This is the first case of the Zika virus in Mumbai city.

A 79-year-old man who is a resident of the Chembur area was affected by the virus on July 19. He had the symptoms of fever, a cold, and a cough. When Mumbai Municipal Corporation inquired about the patient, they found that some of his family members had come from abroad. Taking pre-emptive action, Mumbai Corporation examined the other members of the patient’s family and his neighbours.

Afterwards, all the samples were sent to Pune’s National Institute of Virology, which confirmed that a 79-year-old man was infected with Zika. Fortunately, no other people are infected by the disease right now.

The man was then treated in a private hospital in Chembur. And after successful treatment, he was discharged from the hospital on August 2. Surprisingly, this is the first case of Zika virus in Mumbai city.

Zika is a mild disease primarily transmitted by the bite of an infected mosquito from Aedes aegypti. While 80% of patients with this disease do not show any symptoms, other patients sometimes experience fever, joint pain, body ache, headache, red eyes, vomiting, malaise, fever, or body rash.

Maharashtra reported its first case of Zika virus in July 2021 in Belsar, in the Purandar tahsils of Pune district. A 50-year-old woman was infected with Zika.

Meanwhile, Additional Commissioner of Western Suburbs of Mumbai Municipal Corporation, Dr. Sudhakar Shinde, informed that the corporation is taking due precautionary measures regarding the transmission of viral diseases. “People who have been in contact with someone who has been infected with the Zika virus are being traced. Also, instructions have been given to take necessary preventive measures,” he said.
