Mumbai’s Mobile Network Performance Evaluated in TRAI’s Latest Drive Test Report

Mumbai, 5th March 2025: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has released a report on Independent Drive Tests (IDTs) conducted in nine cities. These tests, carried out in December 2024, aimed to assess the quality of voice and data services provided by cellular mobile operators.
A cabinet press briefing is scheduled for 3 PM today, March 5, at NMC.
As per the report, TRAI, through its designated agency, conducted IDTs across highways and railway routes, including Aligarh city and the Meerut-to-Dehradun railway route (UP-West LSA), Bhubaneswar (Odisha LSA), Jammu city and the Jammu-to-Srinagar highway (J&K LSA), Lucknow city and the Fatehpur-to-Varanasi highway (UP-East LSA), Navi Mumbai (Mumbai LSA), Raipur (MP LSA), Siliguri, Darjeeling, and Kalimpong (West Bengal LSA), Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala LSA), and the Vapi-to-Rewari highway (Gujarat LSA).
“The drive test evaluated the performance of Bharti Airtel Ltd, BSNL/MTNL, Reliance Jio Infocom Ltd, and Vodafone Idea Ltd, which provide voice and data services in various Licensed Service Areas (LSAs) using technologies such as 2G, 3G, 4G, and 5G,” the report stated.
The report further mentioned that “the findings of the drive tests reflect the network performance of service providers within the specific areas and routes tested at the time of the assessment.”
Key performance indicators (KPIs) for voice and data services were analyzed for all telecom providers operating in these regions.

– Speech quality (evaluated using Mean Opinion Score – MOS)
– Packet drop rate for voice (uplink and downlink)
– Call silence rate
– Signal coverage percentage
Data Services
– Data throughput (both uplink and downlink)
– Packet drop rate (uplink and downlink)
– Video streaming delay
– Latency
– Jitter
