Mumbai’s National College Metro Station Faces Omission on Metro 2B Route

Mumbai, 3rd September 2023: The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is considering the exclusion of the National College Metro Station from the Andheri West – Mandalay Metro 2B route, specifically the Bandra West to Andheri West section. This decision comes in response to the demands of MLA Ashish Shelar and the residents of Bandra West.

The proposal to eliminate this station has been forwarded to Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, who also serves as the President of MMRDA. A final decision on this matter is expected once it receives approval from the Chief Minister and the authority.

The MMRDA is actively progressing with the construction of the 23.643 km Andheri West – Mandalay route, which includes 20 stations. Among these stations was the proposed National College Metro Station, intended to be located on the stretch from Grace Galaxy Hotel to Maruti Auto Vista Showroom, in front of Tata Blocks Parsi Colony. However, due to opposition from local residents, the demand arose to relocate the station to preserve greenery.

The establishment of the National College Metro Station would have required the removal of trees in Sadhu Vaswani Park, resulting in a loss of 290 square meters of green space. In February, residents had formally requested the relocation of the station to protect this green area.

In response to this demand, Ashish Shelar pursued the matter by corresponding with the MMRDA. Ultimately, his efforts have yielded results, with MMRDA exploring alternatives for the station’s relocation. However, as relocation proved unfeasible, the decision to exclude the National College Metro Station has been made. MMRDA has communicated this decision to Ashish Shelar via a formal letter.

The detailed proposal regarding this omission has been submitted to the Chief Minister for consideration. Once approved by the Chief Minister, the proposal will be presented during an authority meeting. The final decision will then be announced.

Should the National College Metro Station be omitted, residents from the National College, Railway Colony, and Tata Blocks Parsi Colony areas will need to access metro travel from either Saraswat Metro Station in Khar or Bandra West Metro Station.
