Navi Mumbai: 527 Buildings Declared ‘Dangerous’; NMMC Urges Immediate Action and Structural Audits

Navi Mumbai, 5th June 2025: The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has identified 527 buildings within its jurisdiction as “dangerous” following a safety survey conducted for the 2024–25 period. The announcement was made via an official release on Wednesday, urging immediate precautionary measures by occupants and owners.

As per provisions of the Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Act, buildings over 30 years old must undergo a structural audit by a civil or structural engineer registered with the NMMC. The civic body has advised residents of the flagged buildings to vacate the premises without delay.

NMMC has also appealed to property owners, housing societies, and institutions to get structural audits completed and submit their reports to the Assistant Municipal Commissioner or Assistant Director of Urban Planning by September 30.

The civic body clarified that the building’s age will be calculated from the date of its first occupancy, whether full or partial. Once the audit is completed, a safety certificate confirming all necessary repairs recommended by the engineer must be submitted to NMMC.

Failing to comply with the structural audit requirement could attract a penalty of ₹25,000 or an amount equivalent to the full annual property tax—whichever is higher, the corporation warned.

The initiative aims to avert structural collapses and ensure public safety ahead of the monsoon season.
