Navi Mumbai: Golden Jackals Spotted Playing with Dog Near Kharghar Wetlands Amid Urban Expansion

Navi Mumbai, 12th December 2024: Golden jackals have been increasingly spotted near the wetlands of Kharghar, with one particularly unusual event occurring on the morning of December 12. Animal lovers witnessed a golden jackal and a dog playing together near Sector 16 in Kharghar, offering a rare sight.
The cool winter weather has brought more golden jackals to the creekside area of Kharghar. The wetlands have also become a haven for both native and migratory birds, attracting birdwatchers and wildlife enthusiasts. However, as the jackals search for food, they have been venturing closer to human settlements. Previously spotted in Central Park, one was seen playing with a dog behind the Vastuvihar Society near Sector 16 around 7 am on Thursday.
The increased presence of golden jackals in urban areas comes amid significant development along the Kharghar Creek. A bridge connecting Kharghar to Taloja is being constructed at a rapid pace, and the noise and disturbance from these projects are believed to be driving the jackals out of the mangroves and into nearby urban spaces.
“Under the guise of development, the city’s natural habitat is being destroyed at an alarming rate. Mangrove forests are being cleared daily, forcing jackals to enter human habitats. This is why they are interacting with stray dog packs, which pose risks. The Forest Department must take prompt action on this issue. Despite our continuous efforts, our concerns are being ignored,” said an activist, highlighting the growing concern for wildlife in the region.
