Onion Prices Surge in Delhi and Mumbai, Consumers Struggle with Rising Costs

Mumbai/New Delhi, 11th November 2024: The rising price of onions has left consumers feeling the pinch, with costs soaring in markets across various cities. In wholesale markets, the price has increased from ₹40-60 per kg to ₹70-80 per kg.

A seller in Delhi spoke to ANI, explaining, “The price of onions has gone up from ₹60 to ₹70 per kilo. We buy them from the mandi, so the prices we pay there determine what we sell them for. Although sales have dropped due to the price increase, people still buy onions as they are a crucial part of daily meals here.”

Faiza, a concerned buyer, expressed her frustration, stating, “Onion prices have risen when they should have dropped with the season. I paid ₹70 per kilo, and it’s impacting our food habits. I urge the government to lower the prices of essential vegetables.”

As of November 8, 2024, onion prices in Delhi have reached approximately ₹80 per kilogram.

The increase in onion prices is being felt across several states, including Mumbai. Dr Khan, a Mumbai resident, shared, “The prices of onions and garlic have doubled, which has affected my household budget. I bought 5 kilos of onions for ₹360.”

Aakash, another buyer, added, “Onion prices have risen significantly, from ₹40-60 per kilo to ₹70-80 per kilo. But just like the fluctuations in the stock market, onion prices will eventually drop.”

Kishore, a market seller, explained, “The price hike is due to inflation. The cost has gone from ₹60 to ₹70-75 per kilo, but since onions are a staple, customers continue to buy them despite the increase.”
