Over 2 Lakh Aedes Mosquito Breeding Sites Found in Mumbai Since January 2024

Mumbai ,16th May 2025: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has identified over 2.17 lakh Aedes mosquito breeding sites in Mumbai since January 2024, intensifying concerns over the spread of dengue during the monsoon.
According to civic officials, 25,169 breeding spots were found between January and May 6, 2025, alone. Insecticide and public health departments have sprayed anti-mosquito smoke in 2,292 buildings and over 27 lakh huts. Throughout 2024, over 1.92 lakh breeding sites were detected, with fumigation carried out in nearly 6 lakh buildings and close to 8 million huts.
In response, the BMC has launched tech-driven awareness efforts, including mobile apps like Bhaag Mosquito Bhaag and Mumbai Against Dengue. These platforms help citizens identify mosquito breeding sources, offer prevention tips, and involve schools, colleges, and workplaces in the campaign.
The initiative aligns with this year’s National Dengue Day slogan: “Check, Clean, Cover – Measures to Defeat Dengue.” Short films featuring celebrities from the Marathi and Hindi film industries are also being circulated to boost public engagement.
In 2024, Mumbai reported 5,906 dengue cases, with 311 more logged between May 1–14, 2025. Authorities urge residents to keep surroundings clean, empty stagnant water from containers, and use mosquito nets with repellents. A weekly “dry day” is also recommended to prevent mosquito breeding.
Early treatment is advised for anyone showing symptoms of fever.
