Physical Presence Requirement for Stamp Purchase Withdrawn in Mumbai

Mumbai, 6th April 2023: The physical presence requirement for purchasing Rs 100 and Rs 500 stamps, previously mandated by the Additional Controller of Stamps Satish Deshmukh, has been withdrawn after facing backlash from various groups.

On Thursday, Inspector General of Registration and Controller of Stamps Shravan Hardikar issued an order to suspend the mandate in Mumbai, where the decision had been implemented from April 3.

Previously, anyone could purchase stamps on behalf of the applicant. However, with the new mandate, buyers had to be physically present at the time of purchase. This decision was opposed by lawyers’ associations, resulting in a boycott of stamp purchases on April 3.

Citizens, including women, senior citizens, and those with physical disabilities, were also affected by the decision, leading to the suspension of the mandate. Consequently, the buying and selling of stamps will continue as before, manually.
