Sporadic Rains in Navi Mumbai Increased Incidents of Treefall, Concerning Citizens

Navi Mumbai, 29th June 2023: Navi Mumbai has been grappling with a surge in treefall incidents since Saturday, June 24, due to the continuous rainfall. With approximately 10 trees uprooted daily, concerned residents are questioning the underlying causes behind these growing incidences. According to the information, In the last five days, a total of 53 fallen trees have been reported.

These recent incidences of treefall bring back memories of a destructive storm that struck Navi Mumbai a few years ago which uprooted a large number of trees. At that time, strong winds ravaged several areas of the city, including Palm Beach along Nerul and Vashi. However, the current situation is distinct, as the sporadic rain showers seem to be the primary trigger for the heightened incidents of treefall.

According to park officials, a significant number of this year’s fallen trees are the brittle Gulmohar species. These fragile trees are succumbing to the sporadic rain showers, compounding the challenges of the citizens.

With each fallen tree posing a potential threat to passing vehicles, the damage inflicted on vehicles has been substantial. The impact of these unexpected treefalls has not only resulted in significant financial burdens for vehicle owners but has also instilled a sense of fear among the residents.

As the monsoon rains have recently commenced, the increasing number of treefall incidents is becoming a cause for worry. Residents are left pondering the reasons behind this phenomenon, especially considering the relatively light rainfall in the region. The question remains: why are trees toppling even in the absence of heavy downpours?

Dilip Nerkar, Deputy Commissioner, Parks Department, Navi Mumbai Municipality, said, “In the past few days, incidents of trees falling due to rain have been happening in the city of Navi Mumbai. But there are a few dangerous trees here, including most of the brittle Gulmohar trees, which are being uprooted as they are not able to withstand even light winds.”
