Thane Municipal Corporation Launches Month-long Campaign to Demolish Illegal Constructions; Commissioner Issues Stringent Instructions to Officials

Thane, 6th January 2024: In a bid to address the growing concern of unauthorized constructions, Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) is set to initiate a month-long special campaign from January 10 to February 10. The focus of this concerted effort will be on Kalwa, Mumbra, and Diva areas within the municipal sector. Commissioner Abhijit Bangar, during a recent meeting, issued crucial instructions to officials, emphasizing the need for strict action against builders involved in illegal constructions.

Expressing concerns over unauthorized constructions posing a significant threat to citizen safety, Commissioner Abhijit Bangar directed officials to file cases against builders responsible for such constructions. He instructed the submission of proposals for action under Maharashtra Prevention of Dangerous Activities (MPDA). The Commissioner highlighted the importance of personally inspecting construction sites and ensuring that demolition work is carried out effectively.

To deter unauthorized construction, Commissioner Bangar mandated that all Assistant Commissioners actively prevent the commencement of any such construction in Thane City. The campaign against unauthorized constructions will be led by Assistant Commissioners, with additional officers offering support as needed. Immediate demolition of illegally constructed structures is stressed, and in case of reconstruction in the same location, legal action, including filing cases against landowners or builders, is to be pursued. The Commissioner also urged officials to propose action under MPDA, adding that the costs of demolition should be recovered from landowners through property tax arrears.

In response to widespread complaints about unauthorized tap connections in Kalwa, Mumbra, and Diva areas, Commissioner Bangar directed the formation of division-wise teams to dismantle such connections directly from the main water supply. Cases will be registered against individuals found taking unauthorized water connections, and measures will be taken to halt water theft. Additionally, the Thane Municipal Corporation plans to recruit 100 more guards from the Maharashtra Security Board to bolster efforts. Physical fitness and a balanced gender ratio will be priorities in the recruitment process. The Commissioner also approved necessary expenditures for recruiting additional contractors to support the large-scale demolition efforts.

The campaign is set to operate on all days except Sundays and public holidays, with simultaneous actions in different places within each ward committee area.
