Thane: Stray Dog Menace On The Rise In Thane District: Over 30,000 Victims Reported In 9 Months

Thane, 27th October 2023: Over the past nine months, the Thane district has witnessed a growing concern as more than 30,000 individuals fell victim to stray dog attacks. This alarming increase has left the residents in the area fearful of the roaming strays.

The surge in the population of stray dogs can be attributed to urbanisation in both urban and rural parts of the Thane district, coupled with the accumulation of waste and litter. Notably, stray dogs often feed on discarded food from vehicles, particularly those of Chinese takeout, and are accustomed to receiving leftovers from chicken and mutton shops, which often contain meat.

Due to this, stray dogs sometimes resort to chasing people on two-wheelers, barking at passersby, and even resorting to biting in cases where food is scarce. As a result, the problem of stray dogs have become increasingly complex in both urban and rural areas of the Thane district.

According to information provided by local authorities, the nine-month period from January to September 2023 saw a staggering 30,026 reported dog attacks. Out of these, a significant 17,737 dog bite victims sought treatment at Thane District General Hospital in the last six months. Within the Thane municipality, 12,987 cases of dog-related injuries were reported during the same nine-month span. These cases consisted of 5,098 dog bites, 7,126 scratches, and 763 instances of broken wrists.
