Traffic Police Induct 43 Cranes to Tackle Road Blockages in Mumbai

Mumbai, 12th May 2025: In a significant step toward easing traffic congestion, the Mumbai Traffic Police have inducted 43 cranes into their fleet to swiftly remove stalled vehicles from city roads. Until now, the department relied on municipal cranes, which often led to delays and worsened traffic snarls.

Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Anil Kumbhare confirmed that the new cranes have been deployed as part of the first phase and will be distributed across various traffic divisions. “If heavy vehicles stall on the road, they can now be removed immediately, preventing bottlenecks,” Kumbhare said.

Traffic in Mumbai often grinds to a halt when vehicles—especially heavy ones—break down on flyovers or in the middle lanes of highways. These incidents not only disrupt the flow of traffic but also pose serious safety hazards, as fast-moving vehicles may not notice the obstruction in time, increasing the risk of accidents.
Previously, the traffic police lacked cranes of their own and had to rely on the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) for assistance. This process caused lengthy delays, with stalled vehicles sometimes remaining on the road for hours, compounding the congestion.

With the addition of 43 dedicated cranes, authorities aim to significantly reduce response time and ensure the prompt clearance of defunct vehicles. The initiative is expected to streamline Mumbai’s overburdened traffic system, particularly during peak hours and on high-traffic corridors.
The move is part of a broader effort by the Mumbai Traffic Police to enhance traffic management and improve commuter safety across the city.
