Tragic Suicide in Panvel: Man Takes Extreme Step Due to Online Rummy Debt

Panvel, 2nd July 2023: In a distressing incident that unfolded on Saturday, a 55-year-old man tragically took his own life by hanging himself at his residence in Panvel. The deceased, identified as Sanjay Junatra, had been grappling with the mounting debt he had taken for playing the online rummy game Junglee Rummy.

Sanjay, a resident of Panvel, had fallen into the trap of online rummy, hoping to earn quick money to overcome his financial problems. Despite the government’s ban on playing rummy gambling with money in physical space, many individuals have turned to online rummy playing apps as they remain unregulated by the government.

According to the suicide note left behind by Sanjay, he initially took a loan to play rummy, which he lost in the game. Further, he again took the loan to recover the losses, but this time too, his attempts went futile. Now, overwhelmed by the mounting pressure, Sanjay saw no way out of his dire circumstances, and he took the extreme step of ending his own life on Thursday.

Police have registered the case as a suicide. Giving more information about this, Senior Police Inspector of Panvel City Police Station Pramod Pawar said that Sunil accrued a heavy loss in junglee rummy game and took a loan for it, but he was in a dilemma as to how to repay it. He tried to take a shortcut to earn money by removing debt, but it could not work out.

Pawar further said that he mentioned in his suicide note that “I was completely destroyed by jungle rummy in the pursuit of earning money. So I committed suicide out of frustration that I could not pay the debt owed to me.” He further wrote that no one else is responsible for my suicide.
