Varanasi blasts convict Waliullah sentenced to death, 18 people died

Terrorist Waliullah was lodged in Dasna jail for the last 16 years. After the sentencing, he pleaded for mercy saying that the condition of the elderly mother and the family was deteriorating, but the judge refused.

Terrorist Mohammad Waliullah, convicted in the Varanasi serial blasts case, was sentenced to death in one case and life imprisonment in another by a Ghaziabad court on Monday. In fact, in the 16-year-old Varanasi serial blasts case, the District and Sessions Court of Ghaziabad had convicted Walliullah on Saturday, June 4. He was convicted in two serial blasts cases, while acquitted in one by the district judge.

Terrorist Waliullah, convicted in the Varanasi bombing case, has been sentenced to death in a murder case in connection with the bomb blast in the Sankat Mochan temple complex in Varanasi. 7 people were killed in this bombing, while 26 people were injured and crippled. At the same time, he has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the plotting of a bomb case with a cooker bomb at Dashashwamedh Ghat.

Ghaziabad District and Sessions Judge Jitendra Kumar Sinha sentenced Waliullah to death for murder, terror and use of explosive material and attempt to murder in the Varanasi bombing case.

The judge turned down the plea for mercy

Waliullah is lodged in Dasna jail for the last 16 years. After the sentencing, he pleaded for mercy saying that the condition of the elderly mother and the family was deteriorating, but the judge refused.

Waliullah was produced in the district judge’s court on Monday amid tight security. Earlier, on the orders of the District Judge, the security of the entire court complex was beefed up and a thorough search of the court premises was conducted by the Bomb and Dog squad.

The main gate near the police post was also closed. During this, only one gate was kept open for the movement of people and there too security personnel were deployed. Media persons were also allowed to go on the top floor of the court only after interrogation. At the same time, media was also not allowed inside the District Judge and Sessions Court.

On March 7, 2006, there were bomb blasts at Sankatmochan Temple and Cantt Railway Station in Varanasi. Apart from this, a cooker bomb was found at Dashashwamedh Ghat. Several people were killed in the bombings, while dozens were injured. On the orders of the High Court, the matter was transferred to Ghaziabad for hearing. On behalf of the prosecution, 53 witnesses were presented in the GRP Cantt blast, 52 in the Sankat Mochan blast and 42 in the Dashashwamedh Ghat case.

Waliullah is a resident of Phoolpur village in the Prayagraj district.

In connection with the serial blasts, UP Police arrested Waliullah, a resident of Phoolpur village in Prayagraj district on 5 April 2006. With strong evidence, the police claimed that Waliullah was behind the conspiracy to blast the Sankat Mochan temple and Cantt railway station, Varanasi. The police had also told the relations of Waliullah with the terrorist organization.
