Vasai-Virar’s Water Crisis Eases: 80% Work on Kholsapada-II Dam Completed

Vasai-Virar, 6th May 2025: In a major development aimed at addressing Vasai-Virar’s persistent water crisis, 80% of the construction work on the Kholsapada-II dam has been completed. Once operational, the dam is expected to supply an additional 22 million litres of water per day, offering much-needed relief to residents grappling with severe water shortages.

The Vasai-Virar Municipal Corporation (VVMC) has intensified its efforts to bridge the growing water deficit, which has been exacerbated by rapid urbanization and population growth. Currently, the city receives 230 million litres of water per day from multiple sources including Surya Yojna’s Dhamani-Kavdas, Usgaon, and Pelhar dams. Additionally, 185 million litres were sanctioned under the MMRDA’s Surya Project, but only 170 million litres are being delivered daily—causing frequent shortfalls and supply disruptions.

Municipal Commissioner Anil Kumar Pawar stated that work on the ₹135 crore Kholsapada-II project has gained momentum following previous delays caused by pending clearances from the forest department. Plans are also underway to increase the dam’s height to enhance its storage capacity.

Further, a proposal worth ₹290 crore has been submitted for the Kholsapada-I dam, which is projected to contribute 48 million litres of water per day once completed. The civic body is also advancing the Deharji dam project, which aims to bring in 190 million litres per day. Initially scheduled for completion in 2023, the Deharji scheme remains under development.

With the city’s population projected to reach 50 lakh in the coming years, VVMC is placing a strong emphasis on long-term water infrastructure. Officials believe that the completion of these critical projects will significantly stabilize the city’s water supply.

“We are regularly reviewing all major water projects to ensure their timely completion,” said Commissioner Pawar.
