Whale Discovery in Alibaug: 1,500 kg Baleen Whale Carcass Examined and Buried

Navi Mumbai, 3rd September 2024: An 18-foot-long Baleen whale carcass was discovered on Varsoli Beach in Alibaug on Sunday morning. Forest officials, along with a veterinary doctor, examined the whale on-site before burying the remains. The forest department has collected samples for further analysis.

Local fishermen alerted the mangrove cell of the forest department around 11 a.m. during high tide. The carcass initially drifted in and out with the tide, but low tide conditions later allowed the officials to access it. Approximately 500 onlookers gathered to view the whale.

Forest department officials estimate the whale weighed around 1,500 kg. Range Forest Officer Sameer Shinde mentioned that the cause of death is currently unknown as there were no visible signs of injury on the whale’s body.
