7th Mar 2024: India saw contrasting fortunes at the first World Boxing Qualification Tournament for the Paris 2024 Olympics in Busto Arsizio, Italy. While World Championships bronze medallist Nishant Dev clinched victory in his opening-round bout, veteran boxer Shiva Thapa faced elimination.

Nishant Dev emerged triumphant in the men’s 71kg category, defeating Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Lewis Richardson of Great Britain by a 3-1 split decision. Displaying aggressive intent from the outset, Nishant secured convincing victories in the first two rounds before delivering a composed performance to seal the win.

In contrast, Shiva Thapa encountered a formidable opponent in reigning world champion Ruslan Abdullaev of Uzbekistan in the 63.5kg category. Despite early defensive efforts, Shiva succumbed to Abdullaev’s relentless attacks, resulting in the referee stopping the contest (RSC) in the first round.

Nishant’s victory marks India’s first win at the prestigious tournament, offering a glimmer of hope amid initial setbacks suffered by other Indian boxers. Notably, Deepak Bhoria, Narender Berwal, Jaismine Lamboria, and Lakshya Chahar faced defeats in their respective opening round bouts.

Looking ahead, youth world champion Ankushita Boro (66kg) and national champion Sanjeet (92kg) are set to compete against formidable opponents, aiming to secure victories and bolster India’s prospects in the competition.

With the tournament hosting over 590 boxers and offering a total of 49 quotas for the 2024 Paris Olympics, the stakes are high for boxers aiming to secure coveted berths on the global stage. As India strives to build on its achievements and secure additional quotas, anticipation mounts for further spirited performances in the upcoming rounds.
