Maharashtra Chief Minister Vows Zero Tolerance After Mumbai Hit-and-Run Tragedy

Mumbai, 8th July 2024: Following a tragic incident in Mumbai where a woman lost her life after being hit by a BMW allegedly driven by Mihir Shah, son of Shiv Sena leader Rajesh Shah, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde emphasized a policy of zero tolerance towards hit-and-run offenders. He declared that neither wealth nor political influence, regardless of party affiliation, would grant immunity under his administration.

Shinde’s statement came in response to recent incidents, including the death of an on-duty Pune Police constable in a hit-and-run and another incident in Pune where a teenager driving a Porsche fatally struck two individuals on a scooter, sparking public outrage.

Expressing deep concern over the rise in such incidents, Shinde tweeted his commitment to stringent action against offenders. “I am deeply alarmed by the increase in hit-and-run cases in Maharashtra,” he wrote. “It is unacceptable for the powerful to exploit their status to evade justice. My government will not tolerate such miscarriages of justice.”

He directed the state police to prioritize these cases and ensure justice for the victims. “The lives of ordinary citizens are precious,” he affirmed. “We are implementing tougher laws and stricter penalties for those involved in hit-and-run accidents.”

Shinde asserted that no one, irrespective of their financial or political background, would receive special treatment. “As long as I am Chief Minister, there will be zero tolerance for injustice,” he stated firmly.

He reiterated his administration’s commitment to fostering a secure environment for all residents of Maharashtra. “Our government stands firmly with the victims and their families,” he declared. “We are dedicated to creating a safer Maharashtra.”

The tragic incident in Mumbai involved Kaveri Nakhwa, 45, who was riding with her husband Pradeep on Dr Annie Besant Road when their two-wheeler was struck by the luxury car driven by Mihir Shah. The car dragged Kaveri for over 2 km, leading to her death upon arrival at the hospital.

After the accident, Mihir Shah reportedly fled towards the Bandra-Worli Sea Link, abandoning the car and his driver, Rajrishi Bidawat, who was arrested with Shah’s father, Rajesh Shah, for allegedly aiding in Mihir’s escape. The Mumbai Police have issued a Look Out Circular (LOC) against Mihir Shah.
