Mumbai Records Heaviest Rainfall in 24 Hours; Red Alert Issued for Raigad Today

Mumbai, 16th August 2025: The city witnessed its heaviest spell of rain in 24 hours, with continuous showers lashing several areas since Friday night. While rainfall was light to moderate through the day on Friday, its intensity increased sharply after midnight and continued into Saturday morning. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall for the next two days.

Along with Mumbai, rainfall activity has intensified across Maharashtra. A red alert has been issued for Raigad district today. After a lull of nearly two weeks, the monsoon returned in full force on Friday.

In several parts of the city and suburbs, more than 100 mm of rainfall was recorded within 24 hours. According to IMD data (from 5:30 a.m. Friday to 5:30 a.m. Saturday), Vikhroli received the highest rainfall at 248.5 mm. Other rainfall figures include:
Santacruz: 232.5 mm
Shiv: 229 mm
Juhu: 208 mm
Bandra: 173 mm
Byculla: 158.8 mm
Chembur: 119.7 mm
Colaba: 70.4 mm

The heavy downpour brought much-needed relief after a prolonged dry spell but also raised concerns about waterlogging in several low-lying areas.

IMD Warning of Extremely Heavy Rainfall
The IMD has issued a warning of extremely heavy rain on Sunday in Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar. During this period, torrential downpours are likely, accompanied by strong winds. Waterlogging, traffic disruptions, and flooding in low-lying areas are expected. Citizens have been advised to stay indoors unless travel is unavoidable.

Low-Pressure System Behind the Rains
The intense rainfall has been attributed to a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal, which has strengthened monsoon activity across Maharashtra in the past two days. Raigad has been placed under a red alert, while the Konkan belt and ghat regions have also been warned of heavy rainfall with thunderstorms.

Meteorological data suggests a low-pressure belt is active along the northern Andhra Pradesh coast, extending up to 7.6 km above sea level with cyclonic winds. The monsoon trough from Bikaner to Kota, Raipur, and coastal Andhra Pradesh also remains active. Additionally, cyclonic circulation has been reported over the northeast Arabian Sea, near Gujarat and the Konkan coast. In southern Maharashtra, Telangana, and parts of Andhra Pradesh, low-pressure activity has been recorded between 3.1 and 4.5 km altitude.
