Heavy Rains, Waterlogging Cause Delays on Central Railway Routes

Mumbai, 18th August 2025: Central Railway suburban services continued to operate despite heavy rainfall and a red alert issued for Mumbai on Monday, with several areas including Dadar, Matunga, Sion, Kurla, Vikhroli, Ghatkopar, Kanjurmarg, Mulund, Mankhurd and Panvel receiving intense showers. Vikhroli alone recorded over 200 mm rainfall till date.

Railway officials said uninterrupted suburban operations were possible due to extensive pre-monsoon preparations undertaken by the Mumbai Division. Between CSMT and Kalyan, services ran smoothly despite continuous rainfall through the day.

According to Central Railway, monitoring teams known as Track Yodhas are keeping watch at critical points using tricoloured water level indicators. The indicators mark green for normal operations, yellow for movement with caution, and red for halting traffic.

Enhanced pumping systems were deployed at vulnerable spots, while flood gates were managed to prevent accumulation of water in railway areas. Temporary drains were also created where necessary to ensure faster drainage.

On the Harbour Line, waterlogging in low-lying areas such as Mankhurd, Govandi, Kurla and Tilak Nagar caused delays of 5–8 minutes. On the Main Line, trains faced delays of 10–12 minutes due to reduced visibility amid heavy downpour.

Railway personnel remained stationed across sensitive locations to monitor water levels, track conditions, and electrical connections, ensuring continued safe operations despite the severe weather.
