Mumbai Grapples with Heavy Rains; Local Services Disrupted, Students Rescued from Flooded Areas

Mumbai, 18th August 2025: Heavy rains have been lashing Mumbai since Monday morning, intensifying after three days of continuous showers across the city. Flooded streets and waterlogged areas have made commuting difficult, disrupting daily life for Mumbaikars.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis reviewed the situation from the Ministry’s control room, stating, “Maharashtra has been receiving heavy rains for the last two days. Red and orange alerts have been issued in several districts, and similar alerts are likely to continue until August 21. The government has discussed the necessary precautionary measures.”
The India Meteorological Department had forecast heavy rains for Mumbai on Sunday and Monday, prompting a red alert across the city. Areas such as Kurla, Tilak Nagar, and Chembur have experienced severe waterlogging, causing traffic snarls and difficulty for motorists.
In Kings Circle, Sion, a school bus got stuck in accumulated water. Matunga police and municipal teams immediately reached the spot and safely rescued all the students, averting any major incident.
The persistent rainfall has also affected local train services. Passengers on the Central and Harbour lines reported delays due to water accumulation on tracks between Kholambli, Dadar, and Kurla. Harbour line trains are reportedly running 45 minutes late, affecting daily commuters.
Authorities have urged residents to stay cautious, avoid low-lying areas, and follow updates from the municipal corporation and local authorities as the heavy rains continue across Mumbai and its suburbs.
