Red Alert in Mumbai: Government and Semi-Government Offices Shut, Private Firms Advised Work From Home

Mumbai, 19th August 2025: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), acting as the District Disaster Management Authority, on Tuesday (August 19, 2025) declared a holiday for all government, semi-government, and municipal offices in Mumbai, excluding essential services.
The decision comes after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall over Mumbai city and suburbs. The city has been witnessing continuous downpours since late Monday night, leading to waterlogging in several areas.
The BMC also appealed to private offices and establishments to allow employees to work from home to avoid travel disruptions and ensure safety.

Officials said the step was necessary in view of the heavy rainfall warning and to reduce the burden on civic authorities engaged in emergency management.
